Schiller Park (Division 20) recently welcomed a brand-new Pierce Impel engine in March, marking an important upgrade for the station. At first glance, the Impel and the Velocity may look similar due to their shared cab design, but the differences lie in their features, trim levels, and overall cost—making each model suited for different needs.
The new Pierce Impel 1,500/500/30A engine is now stationed at Schiller Park. This model is equipped with advanced technology and modern safety features, ensuring it's ready for any emergency. The low hose bed design, which has gained popularity in recent years, is also featured on Engine 455. This design, reminiscent of models used in New York City for many years, allows for better accessibility and efficiency during operations.
Inside, the pump panel showcases a foam system and color-coded gauges, making it easier for firefighters to monitor pressure and flow during critical moments. The unit was originally built in 2007 as a demonstrator for Pierce, which explains the lack of chevron striping on the rear—a detail that gives away its history.
Earlier this week, Engine 455 was deployed to Bensenville and Chicago as part of a joint training exercise with local fire departments. The training took place in buildings scheduled for demolition as part of the O’Hare Modernization Project, providing a realistic environment for firefighters to practice their skills.
